In the crags of Kormath, men still whisper the name of Wykliff of the Greywolf Clan Leader with equal parts awe and dread. Once, beneath the banner feast of rival kings, assassins crept through the smoke and torchlight to end him three silent killers armed with serpent-poisoned daggers and the blessing of a jealous warlord. They found Wykliff alone in his furs beside the dying embers of his fire, yet before the moon crossed the hall’s broken rafters, two lay headless and the third fled screaming into the storm with one arm hacked from his body. But the poison had bitten deep, and for nine nights Wykliff staggered the frozen wilds between life and death, hunted by wolves and haunted by dark spirits of forgotten barrows. When he returned at last to the halls of men, his hair had gone iron-gray, one eye burned pale as winter ice, and across his chest were carved the symbols of survival by his own hand. No longer merely a warrior, he had become something harsher an iron-souled reaver forged by betrayal itself and wherever the Greywolf banner rose thereafter, kingdoms trembled, for Wykliff had returned stronger than death dared allow.
